Pallacanestro Varese is pleased to announce the signing of William McDowell-White, an Australian point guard born in 1998 in Brisbane. Joining the team following his EuroCup victory with the French club Bourg and a regular on the national team, McDowell-White brings versatility and playmaking skills to Varese, making the 196-centimeter point guard a key addition for Openjobmetis’s ambitions; the team can now count on his international experience.

Born in Brisbane on April 13, 1998, Will McDowell-White began his basketball career in Australia, taking his first steps with the Brisbane Spartans and the Sydney Kings in the Australian NBL. In 2017, he moved to Germany and signed with Brose Bamberg, a club with which he had the opportunity to get a taste of the EuroLeague, though he also played for the club’s affiliate team, the Baunach Young Pikes, in the German second division. It was with Baunach that he established himself as one of the best young players in the league, winning the ProA Young Award in 2018 Player of the Year. Since 2019, he has played two seasons in the G League with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. In 2021, he signed a contract with the New Zealand Breakers, the team with which he made his definitive leap forward, becoming one of the best point guards in the Australian NBL thanks to his playmaking skills, versatility, and ability to make an impact on both ends of the court. His performances with the Breakers once again opened the doors to Europe for him: in the summer of 2024, he joined ALBA Berlin, returning to Germany to compete at the continent’s highest level in both the Bundesliga and the EuroLeague, while last season he played for the JL Bourg jersey in France, helping to make it one of the most key moments in the club’s history, culminating in the club’s first EuroCup title following its victory over Beşiktaş in the final. McDowell-White is a regular on the Australian national team, with which she has won the gold medal at the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup.
